The right water filter for a restaurant or café in Thailand depends on what the water is for. If you want drinking water for guests, water for coffee and tea, and water for ice from one point, a reverse osmosis (RO) system that adds minerals back and serves hot and cold water covers all three. Carbon and UF filters are better suited to washing and general kitchen use.
This guide compares the main types, explains what cafés should know about taste, and shows how to try a system in your own venue before deciding.
Which water filter is right for a restaurant?
Restaurant water filters fall into three main groups. Each one gives water suited to a different job. Before choosing, ask what the water will be used for: served to guests, used for drinks, or used for washing and cleaning.
| Type | What it does | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Sediment and carbon cartridges | Traps particles, reduces chlorine taste, clearer water | Sinks, general kitchen use, first stage before another system |
| UF | Traps fine particles and bacteria, but does not reduce what is dissolved in the water | Areas where tap water is good and steady all year |
| RO with remineralisation | Very fine filtration, then minerals added back for taste | Drinking water for guests, coffee and tea, ice |
In tourist towns such as Koh Samui, Phuket and Hua Hin, tap water quality changes with the season and the source. Restaurants that serve water to guests usually choose RO, because the water tastes the same every day whatever comes in from the mains.
Minairal Pure systems use 5-stage RO, add minerals back and pass the water under UV-C before the tap, with hot and cold water in one unit. Pure Countertop sits on a bar counter or in the back of house; Pure Floor stands in an area where guests or staff serve themselves. See the Pure range for details.
Can a restaurant serve filtered water instead of bottles?
Yes, and many venues in tourist areas already do. Water made on site is served in glass bottles or carafes that are washed and refilled every day. Guests get fresh, cold water. The restaurant stops ordering bottles, frees the space taken by crates and ends the day without a bag of plastic.
Foreign visitors and younger Thai guests pay more attention to plastic than they used to. A glass bottle on the table is a service and a statement at the same time. See how restaurants, cafés and bars use it on our page on drinking water systems for restaurants and cafés.
What water filter does a café need for coffee?
A cup of coffee is almost all water, so the water shapes the taste. Sediment or chlorine makes coffee taste off. Water filtered until almost no minerals are left makes it flat.
Many baristas therefore choose water that is finely filtered and then remineralised in the right amount: clean, soft and the same every day. Well filtered water also reduces scale in espresso machines and boilers, which protects the most expensive equipment in the café.
What if the water supply is unreliable or there is no pipe?
A beach bar, a hillside restaurant or a venue where the mains often run dry in the dry season may not suit a filter that depends on the tap. The alternative is an atmospheric water generator, which turns the humidity in the air into drinking water using only electricity, with no water line.
If you are not sure which suits your venue, read our comparison of air-to-water, reverse osmosis and bottled water. It sets out the strengths and limits of each option on one page.
How often should restaurant water filters be changed?
The usual problem with restaurant water filters is not the unit. It is the cartridge nobody remembered to change. In a busy venue the task belongs to no one until the water starts to taste odd or slows down.
On Minairal Pure systems the pre-filter is changed every 4 months and the other cartridges every 12 months, by Minairal technicians who come to the venue. The owner does not track the schedule and the kitchen does not stop while it is done.
Where can you see one and try it?
To see a unit and taste the water first, visit a Minairal shop or service centre in Koh Samui, Phuket, Hua Hin or our Minairal point in Koh Phangan. The team works in Thai and English.
Or try one in your own venue free for one week, in the areas we cover: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Phuket, Hua Hin and Bangkok. Your staff and guests drink from it during normal service before you decide.
Frequently asked questions.
Is an RO water filter worth it for a restaurant?
It is for venues that use drinking water, drinks water and ice every day, because all three come from one point with no bottle orders. Business pricing depends on the number of points of use and follows a site assessment.
Is RO water safe to drink every day if it has no minerals?
Minairal Pure systems add minerals back after filtration. The result is mineral-enriched drinking water with a soft taste, for guests and staff alike.
How long does installation take in a restaurant?
A Pure system connects to the existing water line and is installed in under an hour. The restaurant does not need to close.
