Hua Hin is a resort town with a large population of residents who stay for months or years, which changes the water question. A visitor wants to know whether the hotel tap is safe for a week. A homeowner in Hin Lek Fai or Khao Takiab wants to know what to install in the kitchen. This article answers both, with the sources, and leaves the national picture to our guide on tap water in Thailand.
Short answer: tap water in Hua Hin is treated to drinking standard when it leaves the plant, but it is not intended to be drunk at the tap. Residents drink bottled, filtered or on-site produced water. The reasons are the distribution network, the building storage tank, and a supply that is stretched in dry years. Villas with a well or trucked water have an extra layer, covered in our article on the four water supplies of a Thai villa.
Where Hua Hin's tap water comes from
Hua Hin's mains water is produced and distributed by the Provincial Waterworks Authority, the state enterprise that serves every province outside Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan. According to a 2023 explainer in Hua Hin Today, the raw water comes from the Pranburi Dam and the Phetchaburi (Kaeng Krachan) system and is treated at five plants in the Hua Hin area, where it is filtered to remove sediment and disinfected with chlorine before entering the network. A June 2023 report in the same paper put the Pranburi Dam at about 90% of supply, with the Hua Hin municipal area using roughly 70,000 cubic metres a day.
That dependence on a single reservoir is Hua Hin's particular feature. In the 2023 dry season the Pranburi Dam fell to 14% of capacity, agricultural releases were suspended, and the Hua Hin Tourism Business Association noted that most hotels already kept their own water reserves. Supply was maintained, but it illustrates why Hua Hin households plan for interruptions. The same logic applies further afield, as our article on air-to-water for Thailand's remote areas shows.
Why Hua Hin tap water is not drunk at the tap
The PWA runs a drinkable tap water programme, in which the Department of Health certifies areas where the water meets drinking criteria. As of July 2025, 257 areas across the country were listed. The certification covers the water the PWA produces and distributes. It does not cover what happens inside a property, and that is where Hua Hin's water picks up its problems:
- Chlorine. Disinfection leaves a residual, which is what keeps the water safe in the pipes. It also gives the taste and smell many residents dislike, and it forms by-products with organic matter.
- Sediment and rust. Hua Hin Today notes that sediment and cloudiness can appear in the distribution system. Older fittings inside houses add rust.
- Storage tanks. Almost every house, villa and hotel in Hua Hin has a ground or rooftop tank with a pump. Water that sits in a warm tank that is not cleaned regularly is where bacteriological problems start. The Metropolitan Waterworks Authority's advice for Bangkok applies equally here: clean the tank at least twice a year and keep it tightly lidded.
- Coastal salinity and pressure. Like other coastal networks, Hua Hin's can carry some salinity, and pressure drops when demand peaks, which lets contaminants enter where pipes are old.
Tap water in Hua Hin hotels and condominiums
Hotels and condominiums in Hua Hin store water in large tanks and distribute it through their own plumbing. The water in a hotel bathroom is fine for showering and brushing teeth. For drinking, hotels provide bottled water or install filtration. If you are staying for a while, ask whether the building has a filtration system on the drinking water line or in the room; many newer condominiums do. Otherwise, the kettle and boiled water will handle the microbiological risk, though not metals or taste, as explained in our article on boiled tap water in Thailand.
The options for a home or villa in Hua Hin
| Option | What it does | Where it fits in Hua Hin |
|---|---|---|
| Bottled water, delivered | Moves the problem to the supplier; plastic, deliveries, storage | Short stays, condominiums without a line for a filter |
| Boiling | Kills microorganisms; leaves metals, salts, taste | Short-term, or as a backup |
| Reverse osmosis on the mains (Pure) | Removes sediment, chlorine, metals, dissolved solids; remineralises; hot and cold | Houses and villas with a reliable PWA connection, kitchens, offices |
| Air-to-water (Air) | Makes drinking water from humidity, no water connection | Properties with an unreliable or interrupted supply, pool terraces, rooms away from plumbing |
For a house on a steady PWA connection, a Pure reverse osmosis system is the usual recommendation. It filters the line through a 0.0001 micron membrane, which deals with the sediment, chlorine, metals and salinity listed above, adds calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium back, and dispenses hot at 90°C and cold at 4°C. It installs in under an hour.
Where the supply is the worry, as it was in the 2023 dry season, an Air system removes the dependency. It condenses humidity from the air, filters, sterilises and remineralises it, and produces 13 to 22 litres a day on average depending on the model (the Air Stand Pro averages 22 L a day, up to 30 L), for relative humidity between 30% and 80%. Hua Hin's coastal humidity is well inside that range. Air systems plug in with no plumbing, which suits a sala by the pool or a guest wing.
Service in Hua Hin
Minairal has a service centre in Hin Lek Fai, with parts in stock and technicians who install and maintain Air and Pure systems across Hua Hin, Cha-am and Pranburi. The pre-filter is replaced every six months on Air and every four on Pure, the other cartridges every twelve months, and a fault gets a response the same day in most cases, 48 hours at the latest. Details are on our Hua Hin page. Owners of rental properties will find the villa configuration on the villas and residences page.
Households can order a system directly from our online shop, with prices in baht. For a hotel, a school or an office, request a site assessment and the Hin Lek Fai team will come back with a configuration.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hua Hin tap water safe to shower in and brush teeth with?
Yes. The water is chlorinated and treated at the plant, and residents use it for washing, cooking and brushing teeth without concern. The reservation is about drinking it untreated every day. What the mains can carry in general is set out in our guide to tap water in Thailand.
Where does Hua Hin's water come from?
Mainly the Pranburi Dam, which supplied about 90% of the town's water in 2023, supplemented by the Phetchaburi system. It is treated at five plants run by the Provincial Waterworks Authority before entering the network.
Does Hua Hin run out of water?
Supply has been maintained, but reserves run low in dry years. In 2023 the Pranburi Dam dropped to 14% of capacity. Properties with tanks and hotels with their own reserves rode it out; an air-to-water system is the option that does not depend on the network at all.
Can I drink the water from a filter in a Hua Hin condominium?
If the building has a maintained reverse osmosis or equivalent system on the drinking line, yes. Ask the management when the cartridges were last changed. A filter that is not maintained can do more harm than good.
