Phuket is Thailand's largest island and its busiest resort destination, and its water is a subject in its own right. The island has no river to speak of, relies on three reservoirs and groundwater, and sees demand peak in the dry season exactly when the reservoirs are lowest. That shapes the answer to the question every visitor and new resident asks. For the national picture, see our guide to tap water in Thailand; this article is about Phuket specifically.
Short answer: tap water in Phuket is not intended to be drunk at the tap. It is treated and chlorinated at the plant, but it travels through an island network under strain, into building tanks, and sometimes stops altogether in the dry season. Use it for showering and brushing teeth. For drinking, use bottled, filtered or on-site produced water.
Where Phuket's tap water comes from
Mains water on the island is supplied by the Phuket branch of the Provincial Waterworks Authority, drawing on three reservoirs: Bang Wad in Kathu, Bang Neow Dum in Srisoonthorn and Khlong Kata in Chalong. Their levels tell the story of the island. In April 2025, Bang Wad was at 25% of its 10.2 million cubic metre capacity, Bang Neow Dum at 45% and Khlong Kata at 46%. In May 2024 the PWA branch manager was quoted giving Khlong Kata and Bang Neow Dum about 95 to 100 days of supply, and hotels in areas such as Ao Yon and Patong were buying water by truck to keep going. In the 2019 drought, supply was cut back across the island and water trucks became a daily sight.
Many properties outside the PWA network, and many within it, rely on private wells, private water companies and trucked deliveries, especially in the hills and on the west coast. So the question "can you drink the water in Phuket" has a second layer: which water, from which source, through which tank. For the national answer, see our article on drinking water safety across Thailand.
Why Phuket tap water sometimes smells
A common search in Thai is "น้ำประปาภูเก็ตเหม็น", Phuket tap water smells. There are several distinct causes, and they point to different fixes:
- Chlorine. The PWA disinfects with chlorine, and a slight chlorine smell at the tap is the sign the water has been treated. The Metropolitan Waterworks Authority's 2025 water quality report explains the same residual for Bangkok and notes that letting the water stand for 30 minutes, or boiling it, removes the smell.
- Stagnant water. In a holiday home or a condominium that has been empty, water sits in the pipes and picks up an odour. Running the tap for a short while clears it.
- Pumps on the mains. The MWA report warns that a pump connected directly to the supply line can draw soil, sediment and microorganisms into the pipes when pressure drops, producing a muddy smell and unsafe water. Pressure drops are frequent in Phuket at peak demand. The fix is to pump from a tank, never from the line.
- The tank itself. Rooftop and ground tanks in a hot climate grow biofilm if they are not cleaned. The MWA recommends cleaning tanks at least twice a year and keeping the lid tight.
- Rust. A metallic or rusty smell points to corroded fittings inside the property, which boiling will not fix.
Can you drink boiled tap water in Phuket?
Boiling makes Phuket tap water microbiologically safe. A rolling boil inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoa, and that covers the main short-term risk from a stressed network and a warm tank. What boiling does not do is remove the things Phuket's water is more likely to carry than Bangkok's: salinity from coastal and well sources, sediment stirred up when supply is restored after a cut, and metals from old fittings. Our article on boiled tap water in Thailand goes through what boiling does and does not do. For a week in a hotel, boiling or bottled water is fine. For a kitchen used every day, it is not a complete answer.
Can you brush your teeth with tap water in Phuket?
Yes. Residents and hotels use mains water for showering, cooking and brushing teeth as a matter of course. The water is chlorinated and the quantity involved in brushing teeth is tiny. If the water from a particular tap is cloudy or smells muddy after a supply interruption, let it run clear first, or use the bottle you have anyway. Our article on brushing teeth with tap water gives the detail for children and sensitive stomachs.
Tap water in Phuket hotels and villas
Hotels in Phuket store water in large tanks, often topped up by truck in the dry season, and distribute it through their own plumbing. The water in the room is for washing. For drinking, the hotel provides bottles or installs filtration. A rental villa is a smaller version of the same system: a tank, a pump, and a supply that may be PWA, a private company, a well, or a mix. The owner or manager should be able to tell you which. Villas with an on-site drinking water system remove the question entirely, which is why villa management companies increasingly standardise on one; our villas page describes the configuration. Our hotel and resort drinking water page sets out the configuration by number of rooms.
The options for drinking water in Phuket
| Option | Strengths | Limits in Phuket |
|---|---|---|
| Bottled water | Available everywhere, no equipment | Every bottle arrives by road over the Sarasin Bridge; cost, storage and plastic add up |
| Boiling | Kills microorganisms, no equipment | Leaves salinity, sediment, metals and taste; gas or electricity each day |
| Reverse osmosis on the line (Pure) | Removes sediment, chlorine, salinity, metals; remineralises; hot and cold | Needs a connection; when the supply stops, so does the water, unless the tank is full |
| Air-to-water (Air) | No connection, no deliveries; water from humidity | Output is a daily average: 13 L (Air Top), 16 L (Air Stand), 22 L on average and up to 30 L (Air Stand Pro) |
For a house or a kitchen on a reliable connection, a Pure reverse osmosis system deals with everything on the list above. The sediment pre-filter protects against what arrives after a supply cut, the 0.0001 micron membrane removes salinity and metals, UV-C sterilises continuously, and a Biocera mineral filter adds calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium back before the water is dispensed hot at 90°C or cold at 4°C.
For a property where the supply is the problem, an Air system condenses drinking water out of the humidity in the air and needs only a power socket. Phuket's humidity sits comfortably within the 30% to 80% range the systems work in. The three models average 13, 16 and 22 litres a day, the Air Stand Pro reaching up to 30 litres, which covers a family or a villa of six at 2 litres per person.
Service in Phuket
Minairal's Phuket service centre is in Chalong, with parts in stock and technicians on our payroll who install and maintain Air and Pure systems across the island. Response is the same day in most cases, 48 hours at the latest. The pre-filter is replaced every six months on Air and every four on Pure, the other cartridges every twelve months, and the business service plan includes an annual test by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. Frequently asked questions
Is Phuket tap water safe to drink?
Not straight from the tap. It is treated at the plant, but the island network, building tanks and dry-season interruptions mean residents drink bottled, filtered or on-site produced water instead.
Why does the tap water stop in Phuket?
Supply is drawn from three reservoirs that fall sharply in the dry season. In 2019 supply was cut back across the island, and in 2024 and 2025 reservoir levels dropped to between 17% and 46%, with hotels buying trucked water. Properties keep tanks for this reason.
Can I use Phuket tap water for cooking?
Yes, for anything that is boiled or cooked. For drinks, ice and rinsing food that is eaten raw, use drinking water. Commercial ice is a separate supply, covered in our article on the safety of ice in Thailand.
Is well water in Phuket drinkable?
Not without treatment and testing. Wells near the coast can be saline and well water can carry iron, hardness and bacteria. A reverse osmosis system removes the dissolved content; a laboratory test tells you what you are starting from.
Which is better for a Phuket villa, Air or Pure?
Pure where the water line is reliable and the tank is kept clean; Air where the supply is interrupted or there is no line at the point of use. The site assessment settles it.
