The price of an RO water filter in Thailand is set by four things: the machine, the installation, the filter cartridges changed over the years, and whether the water is remineralised and served hot and cold. A basic under-sink unit and a complete dispenser are different products, so one figure does not compare them. The useful number is the cost per litre over three to five years, and on that measure an RO system on your own water line costs less than bottled water for almost every home and business.

How much does an RO water filter cost in Thailand?

There is no single answer, because the market runs from small plastic units sold in hardware shops to complete drinking water systems installed and serviced by a technician. The price tag depends on what is inside the box and what happens after the sale.

Before comparing figures, decide what you need the water for. A family of four, a cafe serving 100 customers a day and a 50-room hotel in Koh Samui do not need the same machine. Minairal's Pure range covers two formats, countertop and floor-standing, and residential prices are listed on our online shop.

What drives the price of an RO water filter?

Four items make up the real cost. Look at each one on any quotation you receive.

Cost itemWhat to check
The machineNumber of filtration stages, remineralisation, UV sterilisation, hot and cold delivery, tank material.
InstallationConnection to the existing water line and drain. A Pure system is installed in under an hour.
Filters and maintenanceHow often each cartridge is changed, what it costs, and who does the work.
ElectricityA Pure system draws about 40 to 50 W while cooling, which comes to a few baht a month.

The machine is the visible part of the price. Filters and maintenance are the part people forget. On a Pure system the sediment pre-filter is changed every 4 months and the other cartridges, including the membrane, every 12 months, by a Minairal technician. Ask any supplier for the same schedule in writing before you compare prices.

RO water filter pros and cons.

Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane with pores so small that dissolved salts, heavy metals and microorganisms are held back. It is the reference treatment for drinking water in Thailand, where the mains supply is not meant to be drunk from the tap.

  • Pros: reliable removal of what you do not want to drink, stable output whatever the weather, low electricity use, no bottles to buy or store.
  • Cons: a share of the water goes to drain as concentrate, the membrane also removes the minerals that give water its taste, and a cheap unit without remineralisation gives flat, slightly acidic water.

The second con is why remineralisation matters. The Pure range adds calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium back after the membrane, for an alkaline pH of 8.5 and above. We explain the subject in detail in our article on RO water, its pros and cons and why remineralisation matters.

Do you need an RO water filter with a storage tank?

A membrane works slowly, so every RO system holds treated water somewhere. The question is where and in what. Cheap under-sink units use a pressurised plastic bladder tank hidden in a cupboard. Dispensers hold the water in internal tanks, chilled and heated, ready to pour.

For drinking water the material and the hygiene of that tank matter more than its size. The Pure Countertop and Pure Floor use stainless steel tanks with continuous UV-C sterilisation and internal recirculation, so the water does not sit still. A tank that is never cleaned is the weak point of many low-cost installations.

RO water cost per litre vs bottled water.

To compare an RO filter with bottled water, work in baht per litre. For bottled water, divide the delivered price of a bottle by its volume: a 19 L bottle at the price on your last invoice, divided by 19. Add the deposit, the storage space and the time spent lifting bottles if you want a complete picture.

For an RO system, add the machine, the installation and five years of filter changes, then divide by the litres you will drink in five years. A household drinking 8 litres a day uses about 14,600 litres in five years. A 30-person office drinking 1.5 litres a head on working days uses about 56,000 litres. Spread over those volumes, the machine becomes a small part of the price per litre, and the filters become the only recurring cost.

The same household drinking from half-litre bottles throws away 1,460 bottles a year per person. A site of fifty people, 73,000. On an island, every one of those litres arrives by boat and truck and leaves as waste. Water made on the spot has no delivery and no bottle. See how the numbers change on our impact calculator.

RO water filters for rentals and condominiums.

Many people in Thailand rent, and a drilled worktop or a permanent plumbing change is not an option. A countertop RO dispenser answers this. It connects to the existing water line with a tee fitting and a small-bore hose, drains into the sink, and is removed in minutes when you move out.

The Pure Countertop was designed for exactly this case: no cabinet work, no drilling, installed in under an hour and taken to the next address. For a condominium without a convenient water line, an Air system makes drinking water from the humidity in the air with no plumbing at all.

Frequently asked questions.

Is a cheap RO filter good enough?

It removes contaminants, but check what it adds back and how the stored water is kept. Without remineralisation and a clean tank, the result is flat water in an unhygienic container.

How often do RO filters need changing?

On a Pure system, the pre-filter every 4 months and the other cartridges every 12 months. A Minairal technician does the work, so there is nothing to remember.

Can I install an RO water filter in a rented apartment?

Yes. A countertop unit connects to the existing line without drilling and leaves with you. The Pure Countertop is installed in under an hour.
