Alkaline water 9.5 is drinking water with a pH of 9.5, well above the neutral value of 7. The number says how alkaline the water is, not how healthy it is, and the health claims attached to high-pH water are not established. What is established is simpler: water that contains calcium and magnesium tastes better than water that contains nothing, and people drink more of water they like. In Thailand the practical question is how to get pleasant mineral water every day without buying it by the bottle.
What is alkaline water 9.5?
pH measures how acidic or alkaline a liquid is, on a scale from 0 to 14. Pure water sits at 7. Lemon juice is around 2, seawater around 8, and household soap around 10. Water at pH 9.5 is therefore mildly alkaline, closer to seawater than to soap.
The scale is logarithmic. Each step of one unit means ten times more or less alkalinity, so water at 9.5 is about ten times more alkaline than water at 8.5. That sounds dramatic until you remember that the stomach runs at a pH of around 1.5 to 3.5. Whatever the pH of the glass, it meets a far stronger acid within seconds of being swallowed.
Alkaline water reaches its pH in one of two ways. Either it contains dissolved minerals such as calcium, magnesium and bicarbonates, as natural mineral water does, or it has been treated by electrolysis in an ioniser, which raises the pH without adding much of anything. The number on the label does not tell you which.
Is alkaline water good for you?
The honest answer is that no robust evidence shows that drinking water at pH 9.5 improves health compared with drinking ordinary clean water. The body keeps its blood pH within a narrow band and does so regardless of what you drink. Claims about neutralising acidity, slowing ageing or preventing disease are marketing, not medicine.
Two things about alkaline water are well supported. Minerals matter: calcium and magnesium in drinking water contribute to daily intake, and water with a moderate mineral content tastes rounder than water with none. Hydration matters: drinking enough is what makes a difference, and taste is what makes people drink enough. On our water quality page we explain what is removed from the water and what is put back.
What are the downsides of alkaline water?
For a healthy adult, mildly alkaline water carries no particular risk. The downsides are practical rather than medical.
- Bottled alkaline water costs more per litre than ordinary bottled water, for a difference you cannot taste in a blind test.
- Ionised water without minerals has a high pH but a flat taste, because the pH comes from electrolysis, not from calcium and magnesium.
- Very high pH is pointless. Beyond about 9.5 the water starts to taste soapy, and there is no benefit to compensate.
- The bottle is still a bottle. Alkaline water sold in plastic has the same footprint as any other bottled water, with a higher price.
People with kidney conditions or on a restricted mineral diet should ask their doctor about mineral intake from any source, water included. That advice applies to all mineral water, not only to alkaline water.
How much does alkaline water cost in Thailand?
Alkaline water in Thailand is sold in convenience stores, by delivery in 19 L bottles, and from ionising machines installed at home. The useful comparison is baht per litre, and on that measure branded bottled alkaline water is among the dearest ways to drink water in the country. You are paying for the bottle, the transport, the shelf and the word on the label.
Water made on site changes the arithmetic. A Minairal system on your water line or drawing from the air produces mineral water with an alkaline pH of 8.5 and above, remineralised with calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium, for the price of the machine, its filters and a few baht of electricity a month. Residential prices are on our online shop.
Alkaline water vs mineral water: which matters more?
Mineral water is defined by what is in it. Alkaline water is defined by one measurement of it. A good mineral water is naturally alkaline because of its bicarbonates and calcium, so the two often overlap, but a label saying 9.5 tells you nothing about the minerals.
| Question | Alkaline water | Mineral water |
|---|---|---|
| What defines it | A pH above 7, often 8 to 9.5 | A dissolved mineral content |
| Where the pH comes from | Minerals or electrolysis | Calcium, magnesium, bicarbonates |
| Effect on taste | None if ionised, rounder if mineralised | Rounder, fuller |
| Proven health benefit | None beyond hydration | Contributes to mineral intake |
If you want one rule: choose water for its minerals and its taste, and treat the pH as a consequence rather than a target. Our comparison of mineral water and alkaline water goes through the differences in more detail.
How to get alkaline mineral water without bottles.
Reverse osmosis is the usual treatment for drinking water in Thailand, and on its own it strips the minerals out. That is why the Minairal Pure range adds a remineralisation stage after the membrane: calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium go back in, and the water leaves the tap with an alkaline pH of 8.5 and above, chilled or hot.
Where there is no convenient water line, the Air range makes the same mineral water from the humidity in the air. The Air Top produces 13 L a day on average, the Air Stand 16 L and the Air Stand Pro 22 L, with hot and cold delivery on the first two. A 50-room hotel in Koh Samui, a clinic in Phuket or a family in Hua Hin get the same result: alkaline mineral water made where it is drunk, no bottles, no deliveries, no plastic.
For a home, the shop lists both ranges. For a business, pricing follows a site assessment: contact us and we will come to you.
Frequently asked questions.
Is pH 9.5 water safe to drink?
Yes, for healthy adults. It is mildly alkaline and far gentler than the acid already in the stomach.
Does alkaline water taste different?
Only if the pH comes from minerals. Ionised water at 9.5 tastes flat; remineralised water at 8.5 tastes round because of the calcium and magnesium in it.
Is alkaline water the same as mineral water?
No. Mineral water is defined by its mineral content, alkaline water by its pH. Good mineral water is usually mildly alkaline, but alkaline water is not always mineralised.
What pH does Minairal water have?
8.5 and above, from remineralisation with calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium after filtration. The full process is described on our water quality page.
