The idea of drinking water that was, an hour ago, humidity in the room makes people pause. Air carries dust, pollen, exhaust and whatever else is in the building, so the question is a fair one: is water from air safe to drink?

Minairal has installed more than 700 systems in Thailand, so we are asked this at nearly every site assessment. This article answers it the way we answer it on site: by going through what is in condensed water, what each treatment stage does, what the finished water contains and how it is verified.

In short: water from a properly built atmospheric water generator is safe to drink because the condensate is filtered, sterilised and remineralised. Minairal water contains calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium, has a pH of 8.5 or above and 40 to 80 ppm of total dissolved solids, and is tested yearly by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory under the business service plan.

What is actually in water condensed from air?

Condensation is close to distillation. When humid air meets a cold surface, water vapour turns back into liquid and the dissolved salts and minerals of the ground stay behind, because they were never in the air to begin with. Freshly condensed water is therefore very low in dissolved solids, which is both an advantage and a problem.

The advantage is that the heavy metals and salinity that affect tap water in parts of Thailand are not present at the start. The problem is twofold. First, the air carries particles and micro-organisms, and a wet, cool surface is a good place for them to settle. Second, water with almost nothing dissolved in it tastes flat and is not what the body is used to drinking. A serious atmospheric water generator addresses both, and the difference between a drinking water system and a dehumidifier is precisely this treatment. That independence from wells and mains is also why the technology is seen as an answer to water scarcity.

How is the water treated before it is dispensed?

On the Minairal Air Stand Pro the sequence runs to seven stages. Each one has a job.

StageWhat it does
1. Air filterFilters the incoming air before it reaches the condenser, so dust and particles do not meet the water at all.
2. Sediment filterRemoves any remaining particles from the condensed water.
3. Pre-carbonCarbon filtration ahead of the membrane.
4. Reverse osmosisFiltration at 0.0001 micron, a barrier to dissolved contaminants and micro-organisms.
5. Post-carbonFinal polishing for taste and smell.
6. LED UVUltraviolet protection on the water line.
7. UV lamp in the tankUltraviolet protection for the stored water, so it stays protected between uses.

After these stages a mineral filter using Biocera technology restores calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. The result is alkaline water, pH 8.5 or above, with 40 to 80 ppm of total dissolved solids. The models and their configurations are on the Air range page. For how many litres a day each model produces, see our dedicated article.

Why are minerals added back?

Because condensed water, like distilled water, has almost none. Remineralisation gives the water its taste, and brings its composition closer to the natural mineral waters people are used to. Minairal restores four minerals, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium, through a mineral filter rather than by dosing, which keeps the level stable. The same stage is used on the Pure reverse osmosis range, so all Minairal water meets the same standard whether it started as humidity or as mains water. The reasoning behind the mineral stage is explained in mineral water from air: the science and the benefits.

How is the quality verified?

Three ways, at three intervals.

At every maintenance visit

Minairal technicians measure TDS and pH during routine maintenance, and replace the cartridges on schedule: the sediment and pre-filter every six months on Air systems, the reverse osmosis membrane, the post-carbon filter and the mineral filter every twelve months. A filter that is changed on time is the first guarantee of the figures above.

Once a year, by an independent laboratory

Under the business service plan, the water produced on site can be tested once a year by an independent laboratory accredited to ISO 17025, the international standard for testing laboratories. The report is available on request, for a hotel's quality file, a school board or a parent who asks. The full sequence and the verification method are on our water quality page.

By the components themselves

Components are certified for material safety, the reverse osmosis membrane is rated at 0.0001 micron, and the mineral stage uses Biocera technology from Korea.

Is water from an air conditioner or a dehumidifier safe to drink?

No, and the comparison is useful because it shows what makes the difference. An air conditioner or a dehumidifier also condenses water from the air, but that is where it stops. The water runs over coils that were never designed for drinking water, collects in a tray that is not cleaned for that purpose, and receives no filtration, no UV and no minerals. It is condensate, not drinking water. An atmospheric water generator is built around the seven stages above, with food-grade materials along the water path and a tank protected by UV. The two machines share a principle, not a result.

Is it safe for children, schools and clinics?

The water is filtered, sterilised and remineralised to the same standard at every point of use, which is why schools and clinics are among the sectors we equip. A kindergarten in Koh Samui runs Minairal free-flow stations, and the yearly laboratory report is the document a school board or a parent can ask for. What matters in those settings is less the technology than the routine: cartridges changed on time, TDS and pH checked, and a report that can be shown. See drinking water stations for schools for the configuration.

What makes the difference between a safe and an unsafe system?

  • An air filter before the condenser. Clean air in, clean water out.
  • A real filtration sequence, including reverse osmosis, not a single carbon cartridge.
  • UV protection of the stored water, because a tank at room temperature needs it.
  • Remineralisation, so the water is pleasant to drink and not flat.
  • Maintenance that actually happens, by technicians who hold the parts locally. Minairal's are on the payroll, based in Koh Samui, Phuket and Hua Hin, with coverage of Bangkok and Koh Phangan, and respond the same day in most cases, 48 hours at the latest.
  • A laboratory report, so the claim can be checked rather than believed.

Frequently asked questions

Is water from air safe to drink?

Yes, when it is produced by a system that filters, sterilises and remineralises the condensate. Minairal water is treated in up to seven stages, remineralised to pH 8.5 or above with 40 to 80 ppm of total dissolved solids, and tested yearly by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory under the business service plan.

Are atmospheric water generators safe?

A properly built and maintained one is. The safety is in the treatment stages, the materials along the water path, the UV protection of the tank and the maintenance schedule, not in the condensation itself.

Does the water contain minerals?

Yes. Calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium are restored by a Biocera mineral filter after filtration, giving an alkaline pH of 8.5 or above.

How often are the filters changed?

On Air systems the sediment and pre-filter is replaced every six months, and the reverse osmosis membrane, post-carbon filter and mineral filter every twelve months. TDS and pH are checked at each visit.

Can we see a laboratory report for our site?

Yes. Under the business service plan the water produced on site is tested once a year by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, and the report is available on request. Request a site assessment and ask for it to be included in your service plan.
